The Path to the Hidden Monastery
From sea views and olive groves to a hidden sacred monastery carved into the mountain.
Service Description
At the end of this journey lies something truly remarkable: a vast monastery built around a natural cave, carved into the heart of the mountain. Hidden within its immense stone chamber, part of the monastery once housed a small school. Water still drips softly from the rock above, and the atmosphere inside feels both sacred and alive. Carefully maintained and unexpectedly grand, this cave monastery is the unforgettable highlight of the walk — a place few would expect to discover here. To reach it, we begin in the quiet village of Spilia. From Spilia, the path winds gently through ancient olive groves. The trail climbs slowly, revealing sweeping views as it rises. Between the silver leaves of the olive trees, the deep blue sea appears — sometimes just a glimpse, sometimes wide and open, stretching toward Kolymbari. Mountain ridges frame the horizon while valleys unfold beneath us. As we continue, we pass small, secluded chapels tucked into the countryside. Goats and sheep wander nearby, their bells echoing softly across the hills. The steady rhythm of rural Crete accompanies us step by step. The trail leads into the small village of Nochia, peaceful and authentic, still holding its quiet charm. From here, we return toward Spilia along a different perspective of the landscape — more sea views, more valleys, more olive groves shifting between light and shade. Then the mountain reveals its secret. The monastery complex appears, and within it the great cave opens before us. After time to explore this extraordinary place — and to enjoy a small picnic surrounded by nature — we complete the circle and return to Spilia. The walk takes approximately four hours including stops and offers a gentle yet deeply rewarding experience of scenery, history, and quiet spirituality.
