Among ancient trees and silent cliffs, the gorge tells its stories to those who listen.

This beautiful hike is about 10 km long, takes around four hours, and leads through two hidden gorges in western Crete.
The route passes through Boriano Gorge, follows the rocky riverbed of the Mavropiliotis River, and continues through the impressive Kydoni Gorge. Quiet, wild and largely untouched, it is a peaceful alternative to the famous Samaria Gorge.

The walk begins in the small village of Karanos, where the trail slowly descends into the first canyon. Ancient trees with twisted trunks grow along the path, creating an almost magical atmosphere between the cliffs.

After passing through the first gorge, the trail follows the natural riverbed of the Mavropiliotis River, a calm and open section that connects the two canyons and reveals the wild beauty of the landscape. The route then continues through Kydoni Gorge, completing a unique journey through two very different canyon landscapes.

Like most gorge hikes in Crete, the walk includes both descending into the canyon and climbing back out again, which makes it a moderately demanding but very rewarding hike. One of the great advantages of this route is that much of the gorge lies in natural shade, making it pleasant even during the warmer summer months.

Unlike the famous Samaria Gorge, this canyon remains quiet and uncrowded. Few tourists find their way here, which makes the experience especially peaceful and authentic.

At the end of the hike we stop at a small traditional café run by Vofo and her little dog Laura. The café is simple and very typically Cretan, but full of warmth and character. Here you can enjoy a drink or a small snack while looking out across the valley all the way to the sea.

A place where time seems to slow down.
